Thread: Short Term Count-Free Zones.

    Short Term Count-Free Zones.

I would like to see an expansion of the Buc's Den-style FFA zones system in order to facilitate certain types of evil RP which is currently impossible with statloss and the Paladin system.

My suggestion would be to make all the Orc Forts, Brigand Forts, Graveyards (with the possible exception of the Brit GY) and Swamps No-Short-Term-Count areas, and extend that zone to a 5 screen radius around the outer perimeters of these areas. This would not only serve to allow evil RP guilds to establish themselves, it would create de-facto PvP hotspots.

What does a No-Short-Term-Count Area mean? It means killing a blue within this zone would still give you a Long-Term murder count, but you would no longer take any Short-Term murder counts. This will ensure that there is some repercussions to PK'ing within the zone (by going red) but without the Short-Term counts it would allow for this type of RP'ing. Upon entering the Short Term Count-Free zone, the player receives a message that reads something akin to "You are now entering Orc territory, beware!".

I'm an advocate of the Paladin system myself and would not like it to be removed, but I do see the need to create an environment where certain types of PK'ing is allowed so that RP guilds such as Orcs, Undead, Savages and Brigands can flourish on this shard without being decimated by Paladins. RP guilds always bring with them lots of acitivity and are almost always positive contributors to any shard they are on, and making it possible for evil RP guilds to function correctly here would be a step in the right direction.

Yeah, good idea. It's too bad that the Orcs are non-existent here. That is always a fun dynamic. I don't see any downsides to this sort of thing.

We don't need a work around of the paladin system we just need it fixed. Penalties are too harsh, barriers to becoming and remaining a paladin are almost non-existent. But regardless of changes, guilds like the orcs that want to PK with impunity are pretty worthless.

Hopefully this will change in the next update.

The only thing I would change about the Paladin system would be to require carrying the Holy Orb at the time of killing the PK in order to apply the statoss effect. This would incur a cost and a risk associated with the ability to give statloss to a red, but otherwise they serve a very important function in mitigating the overwhelmingly negative impact that unchecked PK'ing has on a server... but lets' not turn this into another 'zomg delete paladiznans' thread please.

I will touch on your statement of Orc giulds being "worthless", though. You are saying this from your very narrow and short-sighted view of what is good for the health of a UO server. Having successful evil RP guilds around makes for a better environment for good RP guilds to establish themselves, which in turn also benefits the crafting & PvM communities, which then also gives more targets to the kiddie PKs. It's all cumulative, and the type of PK'ing that Orcs and the likes typically do are much more beneficial to a shard relative to getting jumped by PKs who's primary focus is to piss off other players, and by extension drive people off the shard. I know alot of PKs don't go into it with that thought process, many of them simply enjoy the hunt and the sport, but you and I know there are plenty who enjoy pissing someone off simply out of malice and will even take pride in bragging they drove x and y noob off the shard.

When we (the Orks) were active we stayed on Ice Island specifically so would WOULDN'T be PKing newbies. Nobody had any business there unless they were fairly well established.

We RPed a more bloodthirsty orc that was "exiled" the Ice Island for being so ruthless. The reason we played they way we did was because of the Paladin and Detective system. There was very little time to stand around and "RP" with someone when we knew for a fact they would be calling in a group of paladins to destroy our characters or bank accounts as soon as they possibly could.

There were times that we did stand and RP with people, and there were groups that we regularly RP'd with and had an ROA with (UND and YEW), but once the Paladins start flooding in we did what we had to do in order to survive. In the end the systems in place still drove the vast majority of my guild off the server and onto other servers or games.

If we could have "owned" the Orc Fort in Yew, or another location, and played there without the risk of statloss it would have been outstanding and I bet the Ork guild would still be active and creating a pvp hotspot today.

I stopped reading after you related the Orcs to RPing.

And that is exactly why something constructive rarely gets posted on these forums. Can't be bothered to even read a post and try to understand someone else's point of view...

no kidding it seems like no one around here even reads posts, they just jump straight to trolling.

i think this is a good idea, and i think evil rp guilds are a lot of fun and add a lot to a server. i've always enjoyed fighting orc guilds etc, it's constant action that you know where to find whether you like to RP or not. the good rp guilds put up with non rpers and still make it entertaining for everyone. the orcs on this server were pretty well geared and hardcore pvpers too so i could totally see them holding the fort very well.

along those lines do you guys have plans to continue your orc guild in the golden lands or not so much?

Not in the golden lands at all. Mounts = No Orcs.

I also don't think many of us want to "start over" with new characters over there to be honest. Most of the Orks that are still active are on another server right now, but are watching to see if anything changes here so that they might come back.

ahh the orcs of kor and shadowclan orcs always loved horse meat =P
they were pretty good at bolaing the **** out of everyone and then ganking them with spears and such.

i still think pallies are getting toned down on original ipy though, so maybe you guys will be back.
