I'm very much new to this game and I have no idea where to start. Any general guidelines or helpful tips would be very much appreciated.

I'm also new to the server, but not new to UO in general. I'll offer a bit of personal advice that I learned over the years in UO. UO is a complex game - more complex than most. You aren't on a set path, you must decide what you want to do and build from it. The game has limitless opportunities and it may take you awhile to get adjusted to the game. But, things aren't that difficult. You should refer to the IPY Codex to see a few beginners guides, features of the server, etc. If you want more help, there's tons of build guides out there if you search Google. Now, with that out of the way, here's a few pointers.
1. Don't put your trust fully into anyone. As I stated above, the game is pretty complex. Anyone can steal from you, and even kill you. However, if you're in a town, usually, the town guards will come to the rescue if you call for them by simply saying "Guards".
2. Don't carry much on you. Once you die, anyone has the opportunity to take your belongings. However, this will turn them grey. A player with a grey name is a criminal, and is attackable by anyone. Attacking a blue player will result in your own name becoming grey, and killing too many people will result in your name turning red, which means anyone can attack you at any given time, and people will always be out to get you. You get your own personal bankbox right as soon as you enter the game to store your belongings. Later on, when you get enough gold, you can buy yourself a home and store everything there. To open your bankbox, just stand in, or beside a bank building and say "bank".
3. Always search hostile creatures corpses. Because in IPY, skill scrolls can drop. With skill scrolls, they give you a few skill increments depending on what type of skill scroll drops. These will help you gain skill much faster than usual, but even with the scrolls, skill gain can be slow.
4. If you're training swords, macing, or any other weaponry skill; including wrestling, you should go North-east of Britain, and right before you reach the bridge to Lord Blackthorns castle, you'll see ta house with training dummies outside. Those can be used to train your skill, all the way to 85.0 depending on the type of dummy you use. Refer to the IPY Codex site for information about that.
5. Don't go overboard on your skills. It's best to choose skills that ultimately make a character that you want to be. There's a skill cap of 700 points total. This means, that you're able to train 7 skills up to 100, which is the maximum number of skill points you can achieve. Many skills rely on others. For example, you can't be a good tamer, if your animal lore skill is lacking. This means that, although you can tame appropriate animals, doesn't mean that the animals will obey your commands.
That's all the tips I can offer for now. It's recommended to play the game on how you want to play it, just as we all did back in the day when we learned. Please refer to the IPY Codex if you want to know more. Or, There's even an UO general wiki out there, if you search google. That site can teach you everything in the game. Anyway, welcome to the shard, and in Ultima Online in general! I hope you enjoy yourself.
