Thread: Question regarding Stealing

    Question regarding Stealing

So I was curious. I have seen some Dexxer warrior builds for Thief warriors, and they take only Stealing. I was under the impression that you need Snooping to steal from players. If that's not the case what is Snooping even good for?

You can steal from players randomly by just clicking them for your stealing target. It will attempt to take a random item out of the top layer of their pack. You may succeed, you may fail, it may be blessed/newbie and tell you you can't steal the item...

The only people picking up Stealing without Snooping are characters that just want to go grey in front of you so you'll attack them. They'll likely be geared heavily for PvP and ready to kick your teeth in...probably with poisoning, too.

Real thieves use hiding, stealth, snooping and stealth. We case you, we rob you, we get away.

Thanks Deg. I wasn't sure if I could really play that type of character, but it's probably what I will go for. I really love the aesthetics of sneaking around, snooping and stealing goods. I was planning on trying to make some kind of fighter, but I will probably put that off until I get this character in the works. This way I won't feel bad about making a combat character that isn't stealthy when I get around to it.

I think I'm beginning to see that you are quite a useful resource on this forum. Thanks for the help

I also hear that stealing is easier to gain in towns with a lower guard level, I see people macroing stealing in towns with a high guards level quite often so I thought I'd throw that out there.

Thank you for the tip Eazy, I thought I remembered reading something about the level of guards having an effect on stealing. I'm currently trying to find a guide on how to start a good thief, and what I should focus on in the long run. I'm imagining that I should have something along the lines of the following:

    100 Hiding
    100 Stealth
    100 Snooping
    100 Lockpicking
    100 Stealing

Now those seem to be the basic essentials. I'm sure that SOME sort of weapon skill is also necessary for the inevitable dungeon dive or other such so for this I would pick Archery

    100 Archery

And then I know that Magery is a must to some degree for Recalls and whatnot, so I would probably sub the rest in as

    40 Magery

And then with an extra 60 points to throw around, probably toss that into Tactics, or anatomy (whichever is better, I will have to look into it or rely on one of your helpful fellows to point me in the right direction)

    60 Tactics / Anatomy

    So to recap

    100 Hiding
    100 Stealth
    100 Snooping
    100 Lockpicking
    100 Stealing
    100 Archery
    60 Tactics
    40 Magery

If there is anything that's shoddy about this I would love to hear it. I am up for any constructive criticism. This also leaves me not sure where I should start at character creation.

I imagine the best way to start would be with 50 Stealing /49 Snooping / 1 Lockpicking, then Training the rest with gold to a decent amount.

I would really appreciate any help you guys could offer.

    Gonzoyola,

I would 100% not make your new character start with snooping. You can go to 0-65 in less than a day...seriously. Put the 50 points into something that's harder to raise.

I'd say you should either probably GM that magery so that you have some sort of means to heal yourself...I understand the allure of being totally slippery and getting away without fighting, but if you get caught without a single orange pot-- any monster that can cast poison is going to completely debilitate this character (poison takes you out of stealth)...just something to think about.

    I'd start that character with 50 stealing / 49 lockpick / 1 magery maybe

Thanks a lot for the advice I've been waiting a little bit to see if anyone had a suggestion, so I think I will go with that. Thank you once again everyone for the insight.

You don't need snooping 100%. It depends on how you want to play it. Thanks to razor the skill needed to play a thief, snoop someone, find something of value, get it on last and then steal/escape doesn't really need to be explored anymore. If you want to play a thief that targets certain items all you have to do is set a razor macro to target the type of item you wanna steal (let's say a boat) convert it to target by type and bam, you can now steal boats without snooping.

If you want to play a dexer with stealing to jack people's regs mid fight so they can't cast, set a bunch of reg targets. Same for weapons, the sky is the limit and 0 snooping required .

Oh and I'd save lock picking for a different character and not waste a slot that won't help me either steal from someone, get away from them afterwards or kill them.
