Tool peaked with aenima and will most likely never rise to that quality again. Lateralus had a few good songs, and I haven't even bothered to check out 10,000 days because i thought the songs "Jambi" and "The Pot" were so terrible and overplayed on sirius that I would not dare risk hearing them again.
I would still suggest that if you have not listened to 10,000 days. Check out the songs Rosetta stoned and right in two. For really getting the full enjoyment out of rosetta stoned you probably should get a reliable copy of the lyrics to read along with the song because it is not easy to understand what he says but the way he is (singing) the lyrics also goes along with what the song is about and what he is saying. Just looking real quick online I think the webpage songlyrics.com has the lyrics pretty close to accurate. Webpages have very different ideas about what the lyrics actually are.
I think maynard's issues with his mother and her religion came through a bit too much in the recording of 10000 days. He seems a bit obsessed after some perfect circle songs and now that album. Personally aenima as a whole was a masterpiece to me. The song eulogy is one of my favorite tool songs. I have a hard time saying I like it more than four degrees though. Love that song a lot.
Opiate.
Very pure, straightforward album.
I mean, I get Tool is about more than 'getting to the point' but still, every song on it is solid, no filler ****, has an honest quality about it, I dunno. I just like that album the most of all their works, even though I don't think it's the best album or has their best songs.

Ahh Opiate. Me and three friends watched Tool on on the 2nd stage of lollapaloza back in the summer of '93. We were sun burned and suffering from standing in line for 2 hours before the show on the hottest day of the summer then watching rage against the machine. By then we were dying and went and found shade. right beside the 2nd stage and this crazy band came up that had this weird guy dressed like the devil in the crowd freaking people out. Good Times!
