Most of us spent a long time figuring these little things out and it has become second nature. Before joining here I hadn't played in like 10 years but I still remember my hot key set up and where I was on the map at any time. Join up IRC and figure out who the more friendly and trustworthy people are, those are the guys who will help you out as often as possible and point you in the right direction.

As far as gaining stats, I would just macro arms lore overnight and turn that skill down in your skill list the next day when you get on. After just a night or two of macronig it you should be strong enough to at least survive fighting at a graveyard. I think you'll find that training wrestling or a weapon skill is probably one of the fastest ways to gain strength as well.

If you are starting up secondary characters (which you might as well), start with at least 11 dex, and as much strength as allowed. Choose you're starting skills and add 1 point in fishing. You'll get a newbie fishing pole and can macro fishing in the background while playing your other character. This char will get his dex up quickly and get you a little gold while you're at it by selling the uncooked fish steaks to the fisherman on the docks of any town.
Yeap that's exactly what I was doing, with the help of a couple of people from IRC. had a guy fishing while I was punching dummies on my mage.
I guess I'll just use arms lore to raise my strength overnight, then turn the skill down when I'm playing myself in devise or whatever.

If you are in IRC later tonight I can hook you up with some weapons/armor for you to use in the dungeons/GYs.

Why be forced to macro a skill your never going to use on your main character.... Some new people just want to go kill stuff in dungeons to gain skills. New players don't want to play a game where you HAVE to macro to have good stats.... Just telling you what my roommate said after playing for 20 minutes.

You make it seem like your roommate wants to just start with a 7x 100/100/25 character..thats a bit much.

I'd agree that allowing characters to start with more stats would be great, maybe even 200 total skill points over 4 skills as well (up to 50 at a max of course).

PS - Why didn't you just start his character for him?

I mean a justified complaint would be why is there a daily stat limit? There wasn't one on OSI... Between the daily stat and skill limit, this server is ostensibly contriving rules that make it necessary to keep the player in a new status longer than OSI did.... Am I missing something?

The reason he quit is quit easy..... he didn't want to LEARN how to make his character VIABLE..... Usually when you play a NEW game you're able to learn it within the first 20-30 minutes..... with Ultima Online you have to train dex, int, and str..... like it's you're effin job.............. no new player wants to have to "wait" a week just to get his str/dex to 100..... even though a lot of people "know" how to get it that high...

Does every conversation regarding skills or stats have to result in a "they should do this so you don't have to work" ending. The point is you do, the game mechanics for the most part are the same as they have always been. Those of us who know enough to even say you shouldn't have to work know enough to fast pace a character into something workable anyway. Those who don't and ask questions like the OP did deserve constructive answers that help them, not negative replies about how this server works.

Part of the appeal of UO is that you could be a brand new newbie character and get smoked by a player or creature you wouldn't even be able to have contact with in a linear modern mmo. And when you achieve those first gm characters or survive that big fight for the first time, you are stoked beyond belief. As for just going and working your character up in combat, IPY has done a great job of enticeing that kind of play style, with a newbie dungeon, scroll drops, increased dungeon skill gain.

For those that do not like the way that UO or IPY work or that this game is not a level up and be the center of attention rpg type game, there are many games out there that could appeal to you. For the sake of IPY I wish noone to leave, but please understand that this is the game you signed up to play and no one is making that decision for you.

OP I hope that somewhere in this thread you got some decent answers and I wish you luck.
