Heater shields get your skill up to a certian point as well as offer a decent amount to resell back to vendors. That's how i started out until my pvmers were finished.
what's your skill?
ring gloves before 60ish ... (if you sell to an armorer)
and then heater shields remain the most profitable (selling to a blacksmith) even after you GM.

You didn't state you cared about skill gain so I'll throw this out there in case you're looking for money without the skill investment: Tear Kite Shields at 50.0 BS skill are 100% success and sell quite well. No gains though. This is how I made my early fortune. 80.4 mining and 50.1 BS! lol.
resmelting is the most UN-profitable. you get a 0gp return when you resmelt. and you only get half your ingots back for a resmelt, so you already cut your profit by half every time.
resmelting is great for skill gain, and honestly is the best way once you can make short spears at 6 ingots per. (it's cheaper to spend the ingots on resmelting spears for skill gain over heater shields at the same level in the 60's - 80's)
but heater shields are your best return for the money, by far over anything else. (not counting player vendors)

Yes I meant the best way for gaining skill. For gaining skill should you always resmelt? Or sell the items and buy more ingots? You say its the best way so I assume you meant you should always resmelt for skill gain.
This is a valid question, can't wait for a response. so at 50's Ingots = gold by selling Kite Shields...
Get to 60 and make gold by Heater Shields. I will definitely take that into consideration, it is extremely hard to get into blacksmithy with no wallet and the need to accessorize my thief with multiple disguises!!!!!!!!!!!!!!![]()
it really depends. if you really don't care about cash, then ya, resmelting will be your best gains (due to getting half of your successful items back, meaning less ingots you need to purchase/mine).
if you want to break even (or even gain some) here's how I did it, assuming you can buy at 1.7 or 1.8 per ingot you should net cash:
50-60ish (don't remember exact): ring gloves (should sell for average 1.8-2.4/ingot to an armorer)
60ish - 75ish: heater shields (should sell for average 1.8-2.4/ingot to blacksmith)
75ish - 85ish: resmelt short spears, should be able to go well rested -> fatigued in 1k ingots or less, smith heaters to supplement loss
85ish - 95ish: plate gorgets (should be able to get about 1.7/ingot average)
95ish to GM: plate gloves (should get about 1.7/ingot average)
overall, you should make a profit, but most of it comes from the heater shields. you'll stop gaining skill off those at some point, but still is the best per-ingot return.
if you are resmelting only, your items would be different, you'll want to use the lowest ingot per item and make that.
I believe it's something like:
29.1 - 49.5 Dagger 3 Ingots
49.5 - 95.2 Short Spear 6 Ingots
95.3 - 100.0 Plate Gorget 10 Ingots
