Awesome. I fancy myself more a roleplayer/pvm than i do a pvp, so i personally find this to be awesome. It gives not only incentive for non pvp styles to find them, but some degree of security when they do. I like it, especially considering dungeon skill gain and skill scrolls (which i would hope drops inside portal dungeons)

This sounds pretty amazing, especially that they happen at sea. Will that mean abandoning your ship, or will the ship teleport (with crew) into it? Will they get teleported to their own instances?

My favorite part is that they truly are random and don't just respawn in one area.

I would also think it would be cool if some random events with monsters spawning and attacking towns or other mobs was implemented. Something like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fcYb7gxVM0Q&feature=related

How many portals will be open in the world at any given time? Do portals shut and move once 1 person goes through them? How long is a portal open in 1 spot for before it closes and migrates?

Az, you have repeatedly mentioned the beauty and intricacy of the UO world. My primary concern is level design. Nothing detracts more from the atmosphere than poor level design. Very interested in getting a closer look at some of these designs, I hope they are fantastic.

Will there be any way to bank when inside the portal area? I can imagine it sucking when you fill up on 1 bag full of loot and having to leave the instance, or if you go in and realise you only have 20 of each reg on ya.

I'm assuming these won't have tons of loot, since it'll only be for one player (I would imagine). If not, it'll be either because it will let other people jump into the same one with you (based on your skills, in which case it can be exploited and hauling out phat lewtz will be the least of the concerns), or because the coding is so superfresh that it will account for multiple people's skills in a single party (in which case many of our suggestions in the Wind forum don't seem so difficult to code in relation).

As for carrying 20 of each reg, don't do that. =]

Should be some kind of invuln vendor inside selling regs/bandages/potions at an inflated price... That way if you want to use some of the gold you've farmed inside to keep going when you run out of supplies you can, but you gotta pay out the ass to do so.

Portals are a great way of dropping premium rares, magic items and gold, and pieces of some of our 44 sets of oldschool hued PvE plate.

Incentive enough for me to go down there!

I would expect it to be open for any amount to go into. Remember Brigand, Orc, lizardmen, and Ratmen spawns back on OSI?
My guess is that it will fall into that catagory.

That's what I call an awesome guild effort. 1 man with a packhorse to store the lewt, a few mages, fighters, maybe a lockpicker if there's locked chests, a stealth scout to explore and map it out, and a Portal Watcher from the outside that keeps tabs on outside intruders. I could definatly dig this.

My only question is will this effect Housing? will it randomly place over trees, rocks, animals, monsters and junk that are in the woods already... My question is just out of curiosity.

I'm looking forward to this new feature.

Reminds me of when I used to wander looking for evil mage camp spawn to get a blood tile, only 1000% cooler. This is an amazing idea, plus it gets the sheep out of town for reds to hunt, I know the server I was on previously was screaming for something like this but could never come up with such an elegant solution. Hats off to the team...

I really like the idea.
Only things that comes to mind is:
Will there be a ress shrine inside in case you die?
In case the Portal spawn in a remote place noone will ever get to (top corner of water? inside a mountain(?)), will it be on a timer and decay to spawn somewhere else?
Will the instance kick you out, if your connection drops?

No it will not affect housing. And if we didn't check for these things it would be an ultimate fail. So yes, you should be able to walk up the steps to enter the portal regardless of where it spawns.

No, Yes, and Yes (depending on how fast you reconnect, i.e. no logging out in portal areas.)

Good question. I guess that would be a problem if someone loses connection. Doubt there's going to be a ress stone, but maybe everytime one spawns, they spawn a wandering healer or something *shugs* atleast that wouldn't be a bad idea.

I think this is a really cool idea. A couple of questions though

Does the Portal disappear after one person uses it? Or just after some set amount of time? Is it always a solo-adventure, i.e. no option for your party to come in as well? Lastly, where do you "pop out" when it's over? While obviously I think banking inside the portal is off the table, there could be a problem of PKs portal camping (hell, I know I'd do it). I think the appeal of portals would be lost if you knew there's a 50% chance a PK would be waiting outside for you. Maybe it's an acceptable risk, there are much more efficient ways of PKing than running around looking for portals-- maybe no one would do it, but I thought it was worth mentioning. Making the person pop out somewhere in the world randomly might be a good way of mitigating the risk of campers, while not giving them a free ride home.

Evil Mage, Blood Tile spawn. Looks like they are still spawning on ea servers but they were spawning in 99-00 time frame as well.

It sounds like I'm the only one who cringed at the word "instanced."

Az looks to have put a ton of work into this, coming up with new dungeons and quests and story, and I think that is awesome.

Prior to any criticisms my questions are:

Can more than one player enter the same instance? - I'd like to see groups of people able to enjoy these experiences together (this must be the socialiser in me talking)

Is there an easy way to give us an idea of how likely we are to bump into one of these? - I think for the system to work it would need to be somewhat frequent, but if I'm chasing someone through the woods and they get an instant gate into their own private area via portal, I'll be pretty frustrated that I can't follow them in.

Can you recall out of a portal? If not, where do you come out and have you accounted for the issue of someone camping the exit?

I remember those random orc spawns UO had... my house spot on ice isle was a hot spot for those. Random orcs spawning in my house always killed my polar bears!

I really like this idea, it offers a safe zone for the hardcore PVErs, but isn't something they can just turn on and off at will, it actually requires them to work for and in most cases "earn" the right to PVM in peace. Also a nice break for IDOC Hunters as well :P

Excellent idea, with excellent questions in this thread so far.

However, I wish to add my own question:

Will skill gains in portals be the same as they are in static dungeons?

Cool, I do remember the evil mages in T2A, but never came across one of the spawns.

Hey AZ, are these portals themed? Like some being orc, lizardmen, skeles, dragons or are they are the same general setup?

Are they multi leveled as far as difficulty?

Will the bank message board have the "help" post like the original spawns did?

Basia
November 22nd, 2010, 03:00 PM
My questions -

Once the portal has spawned in an area, how long can it be expected to remain in that location? I assume people will try to notify others if they find one, so I'm just wondering about the time frame in regard to that.

What happens should you perish? Will you be automatically booted or do you still have an opportunity to try and res and loot your corpse?

Az
November 22nd, 2010, 04:12 PM
What happens when you die?

You, and your corpse, are kicked out of the instance and placed gently at where the portal entrance used to be.

Are they themed?

Yes they are.

Can more than one player enter?

No, the entrance disappears immediately when a player enters. At the moment these are solo only. In the future, we might look at adding experiences calibrated for two and three users, etc.

Are they multi leveled difficulty wise?

Yes they are.

Will there be a bank message pointing users toward their location?

No. They're random and you need to either stumble across one in your daily adventures or alternatively if you want to actively hunt them... you have to search far and wide (or get a tip, buy a location from someone, who knows).

So these portals drop skill scrolls after Power Hour runs out, right?

*Also, will the amount of "equipment" dropped from monsters be increased? Like regs, potions, bandages/clothes/stuff you can cut into them, obviously weapons already drop a decent amount. You know, to prevent people from running out of regs or bandages halfway through. Unless I've been out killing people, I usually grab at most 50 of each reg out of the bank, and I don't know if that would be enough to run through one of these dungeons.

Nice work! I can't wait to get in game and try this stuff out. I like that you are having all of the old school plate sets as a goal ...imo the more items, rares, weapons, and armor available ....the better. Even if there isn't a ton of diversity in the power of weapons etc ...it would be nice to have some unique stuff out there.

Understandable, but it would be at a pretty great cost, cos I was talking like a bandage normally selling for say 3gp each to be selling for 15gp eah inside, mark everything up massively, it would be simply for people who have farmed cash in there but would rather stay in there for longer searching for other stuff at a price... I'd even say make it so that the vendors inside this place don't withdraw money from your bank, therefor you can't just jump in and buy bulk regs (even at the inflated price) you have to kill for gold to even buy the supplies. That way if someone comes in for the intention of macroing they can really only bring in what, say 10k? At the inflated prices in there they would have been better off just bringing in regs from outside which they can already do.

Keep in mind: These portals are dungeons, not free handouts or safe havens for macroing. With that said, I wouldn't expect neither bankers nor vendors to make it any easier for you. If you find a portal, chances are you probably have enough time to run to town, stock up, and get back. Or if not, go in, take what you can, and get out.

There will be reasonable time limits associated with the dungeons, and the exit will spit you back out where you first entered. However, the entrance dissapears as soon as the first person goes in. So unless a PK watched you enter, he would have no way of knowing there was ever a portal there to camp.

I take it that these portals have gate/recall disabled inside of them then specifically? Or will they follow whatever rules the standard dungeons have (in terms of recall/gate)? I like the idea of having an assload of loot and having to decide what to keep and what to leave as you bail out; barely able to walk with Strength cast on you.

I'm definately not happy with anyone having a safe haven for macroing anywhere, I'm at a big poster boy for "give everyone incentives not to macro"

Anyway, the expensive reg/bandage vendor was just another suggestion, if it were implemented I didn't really expect it to even be used much, only for emergencies, I can just see people doing stupid things like saying "OMG PORTAL" and jumping in only to realise they are down to 7 mandrake root and then having to decide if they just wanna leave, or pay out their ass to buy some regs to do the dungeon. But on the other hand too bad so sad little jump starter.

This is still under discussion currently. The portals at sea might actually be removed, because pirates already have their neat portal to the pirate dungeon from ghost ships (which will bring you, your boat, and any other of your fellow mateys with you). And most of the dungeons accessible by portals are inconvenient to bring a boat to, which, as you noted, would leave them rather vulnerable. :P

You have to fix this. Put a five second timer on the portal. No one wants to solo in these portals. Just make the dungeon difficulty come from the first person that enters. I don't see how this is exploitable?

I'm torn in that I think the 10in10 makes these sound really cool, but I can't figure out why anyone would want to play solo. Maybe Brogina can enlighten me.

With so much of the vision of the server being devoted to interacting with the playerbase and everyone hoping that we get tons of people in to play, why would you then run off through the woods to find a portal that takes you to a single player game?

Basia
November 23rd, 2010, 03:18 PM
Majority of the time when I'm running through the woods, I'm alone (or escaping). I actually enjoy plinking away at something by myself in game every so often. There will be some people who don't always want to play in groups, and this is great for them. Considering all of the options for group play that have been introduced, I don't think this one thing is going to effect the community aspect that much.

i agree, basia. however, if the portals offer too much (in terms of skill / items / gold) and/or appear too frequently (and too widespread), the places typically visited by the player types you mentioned will be saturated with everyone else.

my hope is that these are a type of easter egg in the game and that they don't carry much more prominence than that. like a second-tier "10 in 10" so to speak.

I think you are right and that they will be this. I don't see many people leaving their group to go do one, maybe in the first few weeks when they are new, but not long term. Whether PKing, pvping, pveing or roleplaying, I personally wouldn't leave the group unless we were at the end of our run/day. The portals, whilst for everyone, will truly cater for those lone wolves who are by themselves for whatever reason.

Either way, I know the first few times I see one I will dive in there to check them out!

I'm thinking differently to most people actually, I hope these things are epic and really saught after... And I love the fact that they are solo. I'd have fun doing it in groups down the track but hell yeah something solo.

Im with ya jay. I will likely get flamed for this comment, but its nice to have a sliver of trammel. No, i dont want the whole cake. If pks and thieves were removed or made obsolete i wouldnt play uo, but its nice to have a place of solitude where i can skill in peace.

That's not really the way I was viewing it... If you find one, then by all means skill up in peace. My point was more that I just hope it's a different experience to regular dungeons. People cant plan to do all their farming or skill gaining in portals because they cant jump on at 6pm each night when they get home from work and head into the portal and do what they need to do. That's why I have no problem with them being able to do it in peace, and hope that it is a rewarding experience for finding it, whatever that may mean... Skill gain, loot, or just different monsters to kill.

Im in as leisure. a lot of goons are on the fence about ipy 2 for various reasons, so I don't think any are really active posters. I think once release hits they'll all jump on.

Ja, I was going to pop an IPY2 thread on MMO but not going to bother. There's not much faith in the shard over there. Once bit etc.

Don't have to play a game to be a Goon, just have to have a somethingawful.com membership... I never play with them(except Puzzle Pirates), but I'm technically a goon.

I have active Darkfall / EvE and AoC accounts, I play with my fellow Goons on all of them from time to time, but none particularly seriously. I don't have any time. Mostly it's log on, get skills, set skills, log off. I would really LOVE to be able to give more to Darkfall.

Ah true? If I knew you were playing Darkfall I probably woulda started an account, I was on the fence for a long time needing a nudge in either direction to either play it or ignore it all together...

If you can play UO for all of the reasons you play UO, like me, then you forget the annoying bits about Darkfall just the same; in saying that, it's a great game. Very hardcore. Skill based combat.

Jay
November 25th, 2010, 12:16 AM
It's too late for me now anyway, with IPY2 dangling in front of me I wouldn't start Darkfall now, like I said if I knew before you were on it, more importantly before I found out how close IPY2 was (or could be) then I would have been in. By the sounds of things you arnt on it much now anyways.

Weren't the goons the first to kill a Titan?

Besides being anti-BOB I know the goons have a known legacy on EVE. My brother plays but I've only watched. Seems like a sharp game.

Thread looks a little derailed haha

On the topic at hand: I think the idea behind portals is a great idea, it adds a small compromise for the PvM players by adding a secure way to hunt without having to change the entire rule set. That said, I think playing UO by yourself is only entertaining for about a week, and then it becomes very dull. These portals should place a much higher emphasis on 2 and 3 player content. Adding that later is a step in the right direction, but starting out with it would be even better. As it stands now, I don't think that I will spend much time doing portals because I can't invite friends. This is bad design from a sever interaction standpoint.
