On recommendation from others I finally got around to watching this movie. I was told it was a great 'fantasy' movie but not much else about it.... so I assume it's gonna be like Legend, Willow, Conan the Barbarian, The Dark Crystal, Lord of the Rings, Chronicles of Narnia etc. etc. To say I was shocked and surprised is an understatement.

This was easily one of the darkest and saddest movies I've ever seen. You think maybe of all the people that recommended it someone might have mentioned this? I mean; tragedy and violence are pretty much the overtone of the ENTIRE film with some colorful language thrown in here and there. Oh also nobody told me it wasn't in English... again.. .thanks for the foch'n heads up people.

Anyway... don't get me wrong. It's a great film; just not at all what I was expecting. Honestly there's not that much fantasy going on here. It's not like the above mentioned movies where the entire thing is set in a fantasy world just as the baseline and it gets more fantastic from there. This movie is set somewhere in between reality and another world. I guess I would agree and call it a fantasy movie but for fochs sake if you recommend this movie to anyone please give them a disclaimer that it's a great movie but very dark and tragic.... and has subtitles... =P

I even like dark films and tragedies. Bram Stoker's Dracula is one of my favorite tragic love stories. However by the end of this film the somewhat happy ending is just completely eclipsed by the horror and tragedy that dominates the entire film. I mean right up to and even after the 'happy ending'! You certainly won't walk away saying "well... at least it was a happy ending!" This is almost a horror film to be quite honest. It was borderline grotesque.

Cinematography is well done. Acting is good. Plot is great and is an interesting story. The intertwined sub-plots add a lot of depth to the story. Again; it's a really good film. It's just a horribly tragic story. Also I don't mind subtitles I just wish I'd known.

One of my favourite fims!

I love how some people see the ending as a "happy one" and others as a "sad one"...

I thought it was both really... which is odd... but I think true. I was like "Oh joy, it worked!" ... then they cut back to Mercedes crying "Oh... its still pretty tragic from this end..."

The deceptive, evil human realm was the fantasy in this one I believe..
