View Full Version : Wireless Connection Issues

I have a desktop that uses an N card that connects to an N router. The connection doesn’t seem to be too stable. There are constant drops or no connections at all. The wireless says it is connected with a “very good” signal. But the connection is really slow or doesn’t work at all. I have 2 other laptops with internal N cards that work fine while the desktop still has no connection(signal still says “very good”) . I even placed them next to the desktop. Now I have since purchased another N card but with the same result. What’s strange is I'm able to steal wireless signal from my neighborhood. The signal says “poor” but at least I'm able to view websites through my browser while my own router connection still hangs there waiting to “connect to site” and forget about playing uo, it won't connect at all or its a lagfest.
Do I have to tweak something on my pc? Or my router? I’ve been dealing with this problem for 2+ years now. Seems like it is getting worse. The new N card didn’t do the trick. I really want to get this solved before ipy launches. I don't feel like playing on my laptop.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Just do the ol' network cord from the modem to your desktop... see how things are, maybe ping some sites you rarely go to. then from the router to your computer... see how that runs.
If those two are good then it has to be your wireless card, just be white trash and run the cords on the ground. If ppl say anything just shoot them the bird.

I would start by sifting your system 32 folder. Lots of useless junk in there ;)

Try updating your network card drivers.
If you can't do that, what Brogina said.

You could try creating a fresh user on Windows, to see if its a user-related issue. Sometimes corrupted files get in with the user settings.

thanks. I'll give that a try. and if that doesn't work then I might try formatting my pc. I've been meaning to get that done for a while now. might even upgrade to windows 7.

Sounds like a potential routing problem to me. I've had a similar problems on multiple occasions and after way too much evaluation it turned out to be the router every time. I'm not saying come right out of your pocket right now and buy a new router, but you should go to a friends house or a couple places with wifi access and screw around for a bit to see if you're still getting problems. If your router is a couple years old it could be on the fritz. Another thing you could try is flashing your router with new firmware if it's available.
If you do end up having to buy a new router newegg has WRT54GLs for 50 bucks and people get rid of WRT54Gs for 20-30 bucks on craigslist all the time. Buffalo makes some pretty good home routers at a fair price too.
EDIT: is your router a d-link by any chance?

thanks. but what I find strange is I'm able to connect with both my laptops. and the connection is super fast. while my desktop connection is either dead or slow. right now I'm on my desktop and the connection is fine. but I couldn't get a connection all day yesterday(laptop worked fine). I updated all drivers and firmware last week. even tried unplugging my router and modem. I've got a d-link DIR-655 router, and dlink xtreme N PCIe adapter(new card that I recently bought) and Linksys N WMP300N.
